Apocalypse Next Tuesday by David Safier is a light and fun novel with a nice balance between

• religion,
• the eternal fight between Good and Evil,
• the significance of free volition,
• difficult situations and decisions,
• lighthearted sense of humor,
• and a fragile romance.

Marie is well-nigh to marry her fiancé, Sven, but she realizes that although she loves him, it is not plenty for a lifetime. Marie leaves him at the altar, and moves back to her parents' house, where she meets Jeshua who works there as a carpenter

Apocalypse Adjacent Tuesday past David Safier is a lite and fun novel with a nice residue between

• faith,
• the eternal fight between Good and Evil,
• the significance of free will,
• difficult situations and decisions,
• lighthearted humor,
• and a delicate romance.

Marie is nigh to marry her fiancé, Sven, merely she realizes that although she loves him, it is not enough for a lifetime. Marie leaves him at the chantry, and moves back to her parents' house, where she meets Jeshua who works at that place equally a carpenter.

Jeshua is really Jesus, and he is here on Earth to salvage humanity again. Marie slowly falls for him, and while she helps him to enjoy the modern world'southward investments, like pizza, karaoke, and salsa trip the light fantastic toe, she has to face not only her pissed off and rude ex-fiancé, only her sister'southward cancer, her father's young, new girlfriend, her female parent's psychoanalyses and new love interest, who is actually the Archangel Gabriel, and finally the Last Judgement.

The story is partly told from Marie's point of view, in first person, partly from the viewpoints of the Archangel Gabriel and Satan, in tertiary person. I actually enjoyed the comic strips by Marie's sister, Kate.

Apocalypse Next Tuesday is a very entertaining read with idea-provoking ideas, and lots of situation one-act.

No, the plot is non what is seems.

If I had to summarise the volume I would say it is Adept Omens but featuring Bridget Jones and told with the social criticism of Dogma.
This is why I liked it so much.

N.B. I read the High german edition of the book. It was published in English as Apocalypse Next Tuesday, just as with Safier's first book Bad Karma I am not sure that the humour would piece of work well in translation.

Admittedly I wasn't aware of this novel before I was kindly contacted by the publisher with the question if I would like a re-create for review, just when I hit the line in the to a higher place blurb that described Satan as a dead-ringer for George Clooney I was sold. And so as soon every bit the now hotly anticipated novel fabricated its style into my hands, I started reading it and I didn't terminate until I was finished. Partly because it was short, only mainly because information technology was that good.

Apocalypse Adjacent Tuesday takes characters from religion and propels them into contemporary times, inexplicably powers and all, and makes information technology piece of work. You lot don't take to be a religious expert to understand what is going on though. Hints back to biblical times and fables referenced within the novel are all explained, so fifty-fifty the most atheistic of readers will not get confused by a bush suddenly bursting into flames (to proper name but ane instance).

And despite the heavy religious theme running throughout the story (I say 'despite' because it could wrongly give prospective readers the impression that this is a chip of dry reading), this novel is very, very funny. With Satan favouring his looks as either George Clooney or Alicia Keys, and God making an appearance in the form of Emma Thompson serving a cup of tea whilst in an English language country house (the epitome of Britishness), you know yous're in for a humorous ride.

Another reason why I actually enjoyed this is because information technology was such a quick read. I finished it in nigh two hours, which made information technology a welcome change from the daunting bulky novels weighing downwards my to-read pile. It also makes it ideal if you desire to accept a brief intermission from such an intense and vast volume by turning to a lighter book (literally and figuratively). The linguistic communication used is simplistic, which added to the novel being an easy read, and with the story interspersed with newspaper mode comics you'd about presume this is a children's book. Though filled with grown-up themes and prone to taking the mickey out of religion, this is very much a novel aimed at adults.

Apocalypse Side by side Tuesday is i of the nearly bizarre yet strangely alluring books I've always read. Don't permit the fantastical take on the biblical story fool you into thinking that this is just a wild ride on a satirical roller-coaster, because there is besides an incredibly skilful story within the novel. Information technology's about dearest, family unit and mortality just as much as it is about fancying a hot carpenter who looks similar a Bee Gee and can walk on water.

The good part is easy to explain: I had a couple of laughs now and and then. It is the rest of the book that fails in every possible sense.

The volume is some sort of "Twighlight" meets "Bridget Jones" meets the Book of Revelations. It seems an unlikely combination and certainly the event is a disaster. I am not going to make a detailed review considering it is merely not worth the hurting, but I would like to comment the post-obit:
*SPOILERS*
Have a boy and a girl. The girl is 30, chubby, not besides beautiful, definitely not sophisticated nor cultivated and hasn`t accomplished much in life considering she basically hasn`t tried.
The male child is the male person equivalent of hers: he is a loser who can`t pick up girls and badly clinges to our female protagonist considering he knows he doesn`t take more options.
Now become this: the girl leaves the boy in the middle of their nuptials, and so hides in her male parent`s house, then Jesus (who is some sort of smoking-hot-and-undying superman) comes to repair her roof and they both fall in dearest. The boy, meanwhile, meets the devil himself and turns into i of the four horsemen of the Apocallypse because you see, he is so bitter confronting women. Now we acquire that the girl dumped him it not because she is an inmature moron, it`south because she perceived his inner evil somehow.
Someone explain it to me. Just like Bridget Jones and Twighlight, this is some sort of boost for female egos: "Honey, you are the best, if you don`t notice information technology`s only because you are too modest. Men are bullheaded and pigs non to see, if charming prince came here he would alight his white horse and ask you to marry him".
Well, no. If y'all experience you are a bit overweight, a bit ignorant and a chip uninteresting, you know, peradventure you ARE, after all. You don`t deserve George Clooney or Jesus in flesh, in fact you don`t deserve anything, yous take to EARN things.
And yeah, information technology goes without saying that failed males don`t become whatever ego boost. They are, you know, "losers" i.eastward. unworthy even of pity.
This is certainly a female person-oriented culture. And I don`t like information technology.

This is a genuinely funny volume! The sense of humour in the volume is witty and hilarious, something I wasn't expecting from a German! (I know, stereotypical argument. I apologise)

You don't really see books about Romance and Love, with all the awkwardness that comes with it, combined with the thought that the world is going to end, the horsemen will ride across the earth and the people on world shall be judged.

Underneath the hilarious humour and the overtly Christian motifs, this is a novel that deals with the concepts of Costless-will vs Destiny, Good and Evil, Faith, Life (In all it'southward complicated forms) and Death.

The Basic story is a middle-ish age adult female leaves her fiancée at the alter, because she realises she doesn't love him. Just for a few days afterward to fall in love with Jesus. She tries to deal with woo-ing Jesus, living at home with her Dad and newly married step-mother (who's younger than her), her sharp witted sister, her mother, the angel Gabriel every bit her priest and her (now vengeful) ex-fiancée who does get a bit Norman Bates with her at point. Oh, and the Apocalypse is scheduled to happen.

The novel frequently swaps from the Marie (the narrators) perspective to that of the "supernatural" perspective. This is mainly split between Gabriel's view to that of Satan. All while in-dispersed with cartoon drawn past the narrators sis.

I really enjoyed this book. It's humorous, engaging and does crusade you to call up about the subjects raised through the discussions within the volume.

Marie'southward life is not going equally she planned. Now in her mid-thirties and working a dead-finish job in the minor German boondocks of Malente, she finds herself back living with her dad afterwards leaving the only man who will probably ever want to marry her at the chantry. On tiptop of that her mum has hooked up with the local Reverend and her dad has fallen in honey with a 25-year old internet bride from Republic of belarus.

Merely as she is resigning herself to remaining in her childhood room for the rest of her days the calm, kind and very handsome Joshua walks into her life. Footling does she know that her new beat out is really Jesus and he is on a divine mission before the Judgement Day Armageddon, which is scheduled for next week. Meanwhile Satan, disguised every bit George Clooney, is busy recruiting the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse and he shortly discovers the pocket-sized town has a surprising amount of suitable candidates. Will Marie be able to become a engagement with the hunky carpenter before the end of the world or will God scupper her plans?

This is a highly imaginative and very funny story from the popular German writer David Safier. It has been perfectly translated and the writer'south dry humor jumps out from every page. The flawed protagonist is endearing, exacerbating and completely conceivable, even when dealing with unbelievable situations. A comedic look at human being relationships, life values and love that volition leave you lot smiling.
